Who is a Chief Minister in India?
According to the Indian Constitution, a Chief Minister is
the elected head of the council of ministers in a state
In simpler words, the one who controls, rules or handles the
functions of a particular state
The candidate who becomes Chief Minister oversees the
day-to-day functioning of the state government
A CM is assisted by the council of ministers, which consists
of cabinet ministers and deputy ministers — among others
With the help of media, the CM is responsible for communicating
all policies and decisions to the people of the state
Difference between Chief Minister and Governor
The Chief Minister is vested with the ‘de facto’ executive
powers and Governor is the official ‘head of the state’
The CM is appointed, and sworn in, by the Governor of the
state
Here’s a list of current Chief Ministers in India
1. Nara Chandrababu Naidu – Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh’s CM, Nara Chandrababu Naidu.
Nara Chandrababu Naidu was born on April 20, 1950,
Naravaripalli, near Tirupati, India.
He is an Indian politician who was the Chief Minister of
Andhra Pradesh from 1995 to 2004, before he was again appointed as CM in 2014.
2. Pema Khandu – Arunachal Pradesh
Arunachal Pradesh’s CM, Pema Khandu
Pema Khandu is an Arunachalese politician and the Chief
Minister of Arunachal Pradesh
He is a graduate from Hindu College, Delhi University, and
is the youngest CM of India
3. Sarbanda Sonowal – Assam
Assam’s CM, Sarbananda Sonowal
Sarbananda Sonowal is the 14th Chief Minister of Assam.
He is a BJP member and represents Majuli constituency in
Assam’s state legislative assembly.
He was Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs under
Narendra Modi-led NDA government from 2014 to 2016.
4. Nitish Kumar – Bihar

Nitish Kumar is a senior Indian politician and is the
current Chief Minister of Bihar
He has held the position since 2005
He has successfully appointed more than one lakh school teachers
during his tenure as Chief Minister of Bihar
5. Raman Singh – Chhattisgarh

Raman Singh has been the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh
since December 7, 2003
He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and also is an
Ayurvedic doctor

6. Vacant (under Governor’s rule) – Jammu and Kashmir
Former CM Mehbooba Mufti with current Governor of Jammu and

Mehbooba Mufti served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and
Kashmir from April 4, 2016, but later resigned on June 19, 2018.
She sent her resignation to NN Vohra, the current governor
of the state because BJP withdrew its support from the People’s Democratic
Party.
Currently, the seat of CM in the state is vacant.
7. Manohar Parrikar – Goa
Goa’s CM, Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar
Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar has been Chief Minister
of Goa since March 14, 2017
He is a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party
He was earlier a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar
Pradesh but resigned after the 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly election to become
Chief Minister of Goa.
8. Vijaybhai R Rupani – Gujarat
Gujarat’s CM, Vijaybhai R Rupani.
Vijaybhai R Rupani is currently the Chief Minister of
Gujarat
He represents Rajkot West Assembly constituency in Gujarat’s
state legislative assembly
He is a Bachelor of Arts degree-holder
He is the only minister in the present cabinet of Gujarat
who was arrested during the Emergency era
9. Manohar Lal Khattar – Haryana

Manohar Lal Khattar is currently the Chief Minister of
Haryana and belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
Khattar started his political career in 1977 by joining the

Jai Ram Thakur is the current Chief Minister of Himachal
Pradesh
On December 24, he became a BJP legislative party leader
after defeating Prem Kumar Dhumal
On December 27, 2017, he became the 13th CM of the state
11. Raghubar Das – Jharkhand

Raghubar Das is the 10th Chief Minister of Jharkhand
He is the first non-tribal chief minister in the state’s
14-year history
He was sworn in as the Jharkhand’s Chief Minister on December
28, 2014
12. HD Kumaraswamy – Karnataka

13. Pinarayi Vijayan – Kerala

Pinarayi Vijayan is the current Chief Minister of Kerala
He was sworn-in as the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala on May
25, 2016
He got elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1970,

14. Shivraj Singh Chouhan – Madhya Pradesh

Shivraj Singh Chouhan is currently the Chief Minister of
Madhya Pradesh who belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party
He is famous as ‘Bhai, beta and mama’ among the people of

opposition party because of his dedicated service
15. Devendra Fadnavis – Maharashtra

Devendra Gangadhar Fadnavis, took an oath of office on
October 31, 2014, at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai
He became the second youngest Chief Minister of the state at
the age of 44
He was also awarded the Best Parliamentarian Award by
Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in 2002-03
16: N Biren Singh – Manipur

Nongthombam Biren Singh was born on January 1, 1961
Apart from being a politician, he is also a former
footballer and journalist
He is the present Chief Minister of Manipur
In March 2017, he was elected as the leader of the BJP
Legislatures Party of Manipur and was sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur on
March 15, 2017.
17. Conrad Kongkal Sangma – Meghalaya
CM of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma.
Conrad Kongkal Sangma is the current Chief Minister of
Meghalaya
He was declared the Chief Minister by swearing in on March
6, 2018
He also presented his first budget within 10 days of being
the CM of Meghalaya
18. Lal Thanhawla – Mizoram
Mizoram’s CM, Pu Lalthanhawla.
Pu Lalthanhawla is the present Chief Minister of Mizoram
He has held this post since December 2008
He is a member of the Indian National Congress
He was born on May 6, 1942, to HP Sailo and Lalsawmliani

19. Neiphiu Rio – Nagaland

He previously also served as CM of the state for three

In 1989, he got elected to Nagaland Assembly from Northern

20. Naveen Patnaik – Odisha
Odisha’s CM, Naveen Patnaik.
Naveen Patnaik is the 14th and incumbent Chief Minister of
Odisha
He is the founding chief of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD)
Naveen Patnaik was honored by the United Nations (UN) for
evacuating nearly a million people ahead of the tropical storm Cyclone Phailin
that hit coastal Odisha in October 2013.
21. Amarinder Singh – Punjab

22. Vasundhara Raje – Rajasthan

23. Pawan Kumar Chamling – Sikkim

Pawan Kumar Chamling is the fifth CM of Sikkim
Chamling was continuously engaged in political activities
since 1973 and was actively involved in people’s revolution in the same year.
He was born on September 22, 1950
In 1985, he was elected as a member of Sikkim Legislative
Assembly
24. Thiru Edappadi K Palaniswami – Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s CM, Thiru Edappadi K Palaniswami.
Thiru Edappadi K Palaniswami is the current CM of Tamil Nadu
He is an Indian politician and assumed office on February

His party is known as ‘All India Anna Dravida Munnetra

26. Biplab Kumar Deb – Tripura
Tripura’s CM, Biplab Kumar Deb.
Biplab Kumar Deb is the current and 10th Chief Minister of
Tripura
He has been the state president of Tripura BJP since early
2016
He took his oath as CM on March 9, 2018
27. Yogi Adityanath – Uttar Pradesh

Arvind Kejriwal is the present CM of Delhi
His party (AAP) got a clear majority by winning 67 out of 70
seats in Delhi assembly elections in the year 2015
A former Indian Revenue Service officer, he is famously
known for his key role in drafting the Jan Lokpal Bill
Delhi: Governed by multiple authorities including Chief
Minister
After the Constitution (69th Amendment) Act, 1991 came into
force, followed by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act,
1991, the Union Territory of Delhi officially became the National Capital
Territory of Delhi.
The Act gave Delhi its own legislative assembly and directed
that the administrator thereof appointed shall be designated as the Lieutenant
Governor (LG).
At present, Delhi is governed by multiple authorities
including the CM.
2. V Narayanasamy- Puducherry (UT)
CM of Puducherry, V Narayanasamy.
V Narayanasamy is the current CM of Puducherry
He was born on May 30, 1947
He is associated with the Indian National Congress
He is the 10th Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry
since June 2016
